Held in the cavernous Esplanade Ballroom, WonderCon 2008's Masquerade Contest was chaired by Phil Foglio, who continued the tradition of making the audience call out the contestant numbers. There were a total of 31 entries (after subtracting the 2 that were no shows) that spanned the gamut of sci-fi, comics, movies, television, videogames and anime.
The extended entry features Entries 1-10, and includes entries from Legend of Zelda, DC Comics and Doctor Who.
Contestant 1: WonderCon Malo Mart
This skit featured a dance number, and Link coming in and getting upgraded with new armor. Link was played by two children, one in old armor, and one in Malo Mart upgraded armor. I thought the costumes' design was excellent, the making of the props -- a Malo counter as well as a Malo screen were well done.
Contestant 2: I want to be like you
This was another costume based on Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess which featured Link and Colin. It was a recreation of the scene in which Link teaches Colin how to use a sword. They did a really good job of syncing their movements with the sound, and they used the Twilight Princess music to recreate the feel of the game. I thought this moment was fairly well done, though I thought the costumes were a little too plain and non memorable.
Contestant 3: Namco Girls
I didn't really know what to make of this skit/presentation. It had to do with fighting monsters or something, I don't know. The costume and props I thought were pretty good.
Contestant 4: Batman and Batgirl
The Batman costume was really cool. Their skit was kinda weird, it was like a dance. Since when do Batman and Batgirl dance?
Contestant 5: The Students of Hogwarts
Their skit was super short, and consisted of them walking onto the dark stage, pointing at the ceiling and shouting "Lumos!", and then walking off stage.
Contestant 6: Claire Bennet
This skit was about how Claire Bennet is now stuck in TV reruns and has to relive season 1. It went on way too long and consisted of Claire walking back and forth across the screen in her cheerleader outfit.
Contestant 7: All-American Jedi
Jedi outfit done in an American flag motif. While the stars and stripes are a bit too loud for my taste, in his wordless skit, he just did sword kata with the plastic lightsabers for about 3 minutes.
Contestant 8: Doctor Who, Dalek and K-9
While these are excellent reproductions of Dalek and K-9, K-9 was marred by technical difficulty (it is a remote controlled dog), I think the impressiveness was a little less so, having seen this guy at the Comic-Con Masquerade last year.
Contestant 9: Tech Sergeant Richards
No idea who this guy was supposed to be, but he just came on stage, and posed with his gun for a few minutes.The costume is probably pretty accurate, I just have nothing to base it on.
Contestant 10: Catwoman and Thugs
Thugs appear, Catwoman comes on stage to stage a mock battle with them. Choreography is a bit off, and one of the thugs, when he falls, loses his keys on stage unintentionally. (Stage ninja picks up the keys after they walk off stage)
