With version 2.5 of Magic Online shutting down this morning, I logged in last night to play one final Premiere Event of Lorwyn-Morningtide Sealed. The event started at 6PM PDT, and I opened my packs to build a deck centering on Treefolk and Shaman, making use of the Leaf-Crowned Elder. But as I looked at the cards while waiting for the other players to submit their decks, it felt as if my Kithkin and Merfolk were also really strong, and I began to compose a deck using those elements.
I massacred my opponent in the first game with the Merfolk, and was looking forward to the second game when the server crashed. It was down for over an hour before the server returned, and the event was canceled. After submitting a refund for the canceled event, I joined the replacement premiere event, a Lorwyn-Morningtide Sealed 2X, with a Zero Ticket entry fee.
More in the extended.
With over 40 players in the tournament, there was plenty of chatter in the channel about whether or not anyone had cracked open a Mutavault, and just some bitter mutterings about Rustic Clachan. Upon looking at the packs, it seemed like I should definitely go black, having both Oona's Prowler and Earwig Squad. Removal would be an issue, a problem which hopefully would be remedied with the mixing of green enchantments and instants like Reins of the Vinesteed and Fistful of Force.
My first round game went very quickly; the opponent was running a blue-white kithkin merfolk deck, and started off with a Stonybrook Banneret after dropping down two Islands. I dropped down an Island and a Swamp, and tapped them to put out Oona's Prowler. On turn 3, I dropped down the Stinkdrinker Bandit, and the Prowler hit for 5. Turn four involved another Prowler hit for 5, and was followed up by a prowled Earwig Squad. At that point, the opponent conceded.
The second of the first round game started off differently; instead of having my Goblins, I had an opening had with elves and swamps. A Blightsoil Druid and Nath of the Gilt-Leaf would fuel my Elvish army, and with a Reinforced (by way of Hunting Triad, Nath hitting for 7, the opponent ran of of blockers, followed by a second concede.
Round 2 I won, using Goblin Fodder and a Deathrender-equipped Elf token.
In the third round, I lost to black-blue faerie deck, with red splash to burn with Tarfire and a Nath that was targeted by Consuming Bonfire.
Round 4 I lost, to a deck full of Treefolk, whose Weed Pruner Poplar +3/-3'd my blockers to death.
Round 5 I won
Round 6 I won
I should note that Round 6 finished at about 4am, and after my second loss in round 4, I wasn't really paying attention anymore, and just trying to stay alive. The final rounds are a blur, but it put me at 4-2, and just under the cutoff for top 8.
